In many ways, it would a wonderful ‘first’ book or first ‘serious’ book, after the ones which teach the loyical and elementary mates, for exampleand a nice gift for a young player just taking up chess. It also has to be said that some of Chernev’s advice is a tad suspect.

It seems that Nunn who is undoubtedly a stronger player than Chernev was is correct in his criticisms of certain instances of analysis in Chernev’s book, and also llgical in pointing out that Chernev is sometimes too quick to dogmatically conclude an overarching general principle that doesn’t properly allow for exceptions.
